Winter Wedding Celebration - Emily and Ryan

Colourful Winter Wedding at The River Mill, Darley Abbey

There’s something about returning to The River Mill, a Darley Abbey wedding venue, that always makes me smile. Tucked alongside the River Derwent and just a stone’s throw from the centre of Derby, it feels like a little world of its own. With its exposed brick walls, large industrial windows, and riverside views, it’s one of those wedding venues that really hits that sweet spot between modern character and natural charm. Even in the heart of winter, the light here is soft and moody in the best way, perfect for documentary-style photography.

Emily & Ryan’s Winter Celebration

Emily and Ryan’s wedding at The River Mill was the kind of day that fills your memory card with emotion, laughter, and music. Lots of music. As brass band musicians, they brought an unexpected but brilliant energy to their celebration—yes, there was a combine harvester song, and yes, it was amazing, there will be no further elaboration!

Despite the January chill, the whole day felt warm and joyful. From the moment I arrived, there was a real sense of excitement in the air. These two had put their heart into creating a day that reflected who they are—laid-back, full of fun, and completely in tune with one another. Emily, wrapped in her wedding dress and the winter air, smiled through every chilly moment without complaint. That kind of energy is contagious.

As someone who specialises in relaxed, natural wedding photography around Derbyshire, I’m always looking for those in-between moments—the hugs, the sideways glances, the bursts of laughter. And this day had them in abundance. The music wasn’t just part of the entertainment—it helped tell the story, weaving through the ceremony and reception like a thread that tied everything together.

The River Mill is a standout venue, offering something unique for couples who want more than the usual wedding backdrop. The setting, especially in winter, feels atmospheric and intimate. You’re close to the city, but it feels like a quiet escape, with the river just outside and plenty of textures and tones to play with in the photos.

Emily and Ryan’s wedding reminded me just how special it is to be a wedding photographer in this part of the world. Derbyshire has such a rich mix of venues—from countryside barns to industrial mills like this one—and couples who aren’t afraid to do things their own way.
